Chimpanzees

Chimpanzees are very intelligent creatures and they are a lot like us.  They can use tools and recognize themselves in mirrors.  Here is a link that describes what they look like and where they live.

Although chimpanzees are the least endangered of the non-human great apes they are still very threatened.  Their habitat is being destroyed and they are hunted for the illegal bushmeat trade.  We must work hard to save chimps in the wild.
There are also far too many chimpanzees in bad situations in captivitity.  Chimpanzees have been used in entertainment, laboratorys, advertising, and even in bad situations as pets.   Chimps that have been used in movies or labs often as adults become hard to control and very aggressive.  So they sometimes get killed or left in cages.  Fortunately, there are several chimpanzee sanctuaries in North America but unfortunately we need even more.  What must be done is to stop abusing chimps for experiments and entertainment and then we won’t need so many sanctuaries.

Some good chimpanzee links are

Jane Goodall has devoted life to chimpanzees and the natural world.  She has started an organization for kids and teens called Roots and Shoots.

Chimp Haven and Chimps Inc. are sanctuaries for  chipanzees in America.  They try very hard to make sure the chimpanzees have peaceful lives and proper habitats.

The fauna foundation is an organization in Canada that helps abused animals and has a large sanctuary for chimpanzees.   They have complete stories about each of the chimps who live there and they have an excellent links page for other organizations that help primates.
